Digital Rupee FAQs updated: interoperability and programmability

October 8, 2026

RBI updates FAQs on Digital Rupee (e₹), clarifying wallet mechanisms, UPI interoperability, programmability, and wholesale CBDC use cases under CAT Sandbox.

RBI clarifies Digital Rupee implementation roadmap

The Reserve Bank of India has updated its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), known as Digital Rupee (e₹). The updates cover retail wallet functionalities, interoperability with UPI, and programmable features for targeted disbursements.

The RBI confirmed that e₹ wallets will support offline transactions and integration with existing payment platforms. In the wholesale segment, e₹ use cases under the CAT (Cross-border, Audit, Trade) Sandbox are being piloted for interbank settlements and trade finance.

Legal and fintech teams should assess implications for payment gateways, smart contracts, and AML/KYC compliance. The RBI continues to emphasize that e₹ is a liability of the central bank, distinct from private cryptocurrencies.
