Bank Credit Growth Surges to 18.8% YoY in August 2026
Data released by the Reserve Bank of India on sectoral deployment of bank credit shows that non-food credit grew by 18.8% year-on-year as of the fortnight ended August 31, 2026. This compares with growth of just 10.2% during the corresponding fortnight of the previous year (September 5, 2025), indicating a significant pickup in credit demand.
The data is based on reporting from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, which together account for approximately 95% of total non-food credit. Sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, and services have driven the expansion, supported by lower interest rates and improved business sentiment.
The sharp acceleration in credit growth suggests strengthening economic activity and increased leverage by corporates and individuals. For legal advisors, this trend underscores growing exposure in lending transactions, warranting enhanced due diligence in loan documentation and credit risk assessment.
