RBI Updates Income Recognition Directions for Regional Rural Banks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the Second Amendment Directions for Regional Rural Banks (RBI/2026-27/201, DOR.STR.REC.166/21-04-048/2026-27) on July 16, 2026. These directions are aimed at refining the procedures for income recognition, asset classification, and provisioning in light of evolving financial conditions.

This amendment reinforces the need for appropriate classification and provisioning measures to ensure better risk management among Regional Rural Banks. Section 21 and other powers conferred under the Banking Regulation Act empower RBI to implement these measures.

Practitioners in banking law and financial regulation should prepare for consultations with regional rural banks to ensure compliance with the new directives, which are critical for enhancing the banks' resilience against financial stress.
