RBI Amends Investment Rules for Small Finance Banks

The Reserve Bank of India has issued the Reserve Bank of India (Small Finance Banks - Classification, Valuation, and Operation of Investment Portfolio) Second Amendment Directions, 2026, effective September 22, 2026. The amendment updates Chapter IX of the 2025 Directions to standardise fair valuation practices and improve classification of investment portfolios.

The changes aim to promote consistency, transparency, and financial resilience among Small Finance Banks (SFBs), which play a crucial role in financial inclusion. The amendments clarify treatment of mark-to-market losses, valuation frequency, and disclosure requirements in audited financial statements.

Compliance teams must integrate these changes into internal risk frameworks. The update reflects RBI’s focus on strengthening governance in niche banks and ensuring robust asset-liability management practices.
