RBI Revises Penal Interest for CRR, SLR Shortfalls

October 9, 2026

The RBI increased the Bank Rate to 5.75%, effective immediately, impacting penal interest rates for CRR and SLR shortfalls by banks.

Higher Penal Rates for Reserve Shortfalls

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), pursuant to the Monetary Policy Statement 2026-27, increased the Bank Rate by 25 basis points from 5.50% to 5.75% with immediate effect on October 7, 2026. This revision directly affects the rate of penal interest applicable to shortfalls in Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) requirements.

The change follows standard practice where penal interest is linked to the Bank Rate. Banks failing to meet reserve requirements will now face higher financial penalties, thereby reinforcing compliance incentives under the regulatory framework.

Legal advisors must update internal compliance briefings to reflect the revised penalty structure. The increase signals tighter monetary policy and may influence liquidity management strategies across banking institutions.
