RBI Raises Key Policy Rates: Bank Rate, Repo, SDF and MSF

October 9, 2026

RBI increases repo rate to 5.50%, Bank Rate to 5.75%, SDF to 5.25%, and MSF to 5.75%, effective immediately, to manage inflation and liquidity.

RBI Hikes Policy Rates Amid Inflation Management

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised key policy interest rates with immediate effect. The repo rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) has been increased by 25 basis points to 5.50%. Concurrently, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) has been set at 5.25%, and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) at 5.75%. The Bank Rate has been revised from 5.50% to 5.75%.

The rate adjustments apply to short-term liquidity operations, including the Standing Liquidity Facility for Primary Dealers. The Bank Rate revision also updates penal interest rates for Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) shortfalls, increasing the cost of non-compliance.

The monetary tightening reflects RBI's focus on maintaining inflation within target. Banks and corporates should anticipate higher borrowing costs and recalibrate interest rate risk strategies. Legal teams must update documentation for floating-rate instruments and loan covenants.
