RBI Raises Daily Minimum CRR to 99% from 16 Oct 2026

October 14, 2026

Effective 16 October 2026, the RBI increases the daily minimum Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) maintenance from 90% to 99% of the required average, enhancing liquidity absorption and monetary control.

RBI Enhances CRR Compliance with 99% Daily Minimum Mandate

The Reserve Bank of India has revised the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) maintenance norms, increasing the daily minimum requirement from 90% to 99% of the statutory average, effective 16 October 2026. The change, issued under Section 42(1) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, aims to improve the transmission of monetary policy and reduce systemic liquidity volatility.

Banks must maintain daily CRR balances not falling below 99% of the prescribed average for the reserve maintenance period. While the average CRR requirement remains unchanged, the tightening of the floor limits the extent to which banks can undershoot on any given day. This reduces the scope for short-term liquidity injections through temporary CRR shortfalls and increases predictability in monetary aggregates.

Impact on Banking Liquidity Management

Institutions will need to refine their liquidity forecasting and intra-week cash planning to avoid penalties for non-compliance. The move signals the RBI’s intent to anchor liquidity conditions more firmly and may influence short-term interest rates. Banks with volatile liability structures or inadequate cash buffers may face operational challenges, necessitating closer coordination with the RBI’s liquidity windows. The change underscores a shift toward stricter reserve discipline in India’s evolving monetary framework.
