RBI Raises Bank Rate to 5.75%, Updates CRR and SLR Penal Rates

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the Bank Rate from 5.50% to 5.75% with immediate effect, reflecting a calibrated tightening of monetary policy. The move, announced on 10 October 2026, is aimed at reinforcing macroeconomic stability amid evolving liquidity conditions and inflationary pressures.

Alongside the rate revision, the RBI updated the penal interest rates applicable on defaults in maintaining required CRR and SLR levels. These penalties are critical tools for ensuring systemic compliance by banks with prudential liquidity norms. The revised rates are expected to enhance accountability in reserve management across scheduled commercial banks.

Financial institutions must now align internal treasury operations with the revised benchmark. The increase in Bank Rate may influence lending and deposit rates over time, especially for institutions reliant on refinance facilities from the RBI. Practitioners should advise clients on liquidity planning and compliance protocols to avoid exposure to heightened penalties under the updated regime.
