RBI allows one-time approval for major share acquisitions by qualifying mutual funds, insurers, and pension funds in Local Area Banks.
One-time approval for institutional investments in LABs
The Reserve Bank of India has eased shareholding norms for Local Area Banks (LABs) by permitting one-time prior approval for subsequent acquisitions by qualifying institutional investors—specifically mutual funds, insurance companies, and pension funds.
The amendment allows these entities to exceed the 10% or 26% thresholds (as applicable) without fresh approvals for each transaction, provided cumulative holdings remain within regulatory caps. The move aims to enhance liquidity and institutional participation in LABs, which serve regional credit needs.
Investors and bank boards must ensure compliance with disclosure norms under the Companies Act and FEMA. The policy underscores regulatory support for deepening capital markets in tier-3 and tier-4 financial institutions.
