RBI introduces comprehensive CVA framework for commercial banks to manage counterparty credit risk in derivative contracts. The framework aligns with international standards and mandates risk-weighted capital charges.
New Credit Valuation Adjustment Framework for Commercial Banks
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Credit Valuation Adjustment Framework) Directions, 2026, effective October 7, 2026. The framework establishes a standardized approach for measuring and capitalizing credit valuation adjustments (CVA) on over-the-counter (OTC) derivative exposures, aimed at strengthening counterparty credit risk management.
The Directions apply to all commercial banks with significant derivative portfolios and require calculation of CVA risk-weighted assets using prescribed methodologies. Banks must incorporate CVA volatility into capital planning and disclose key metrics in their financial statements. The framework aligns closely with Basel III recommendations, particularly the CVA capital charge reforms post-financial crisis.
Banking and financial regulation practitioners should assist clients in implementing the new measurement systems, conducting impact assessments, and integrating CVA risk into internal audit and board-level reporting. The Directions mark a significant step in India’s convergence with global prudential standards.
