RBI's 2026 ECL Framework & ARC Sales Strategy

October 13, 2026

RBI’s revised ECL framework and stressed-asset sale norms aim to enhance early detection of credit stress and facilitate faster resolution via ARCs and SNFA rules.

RBI's 2026 ECL Framework & ARC Sales Strategy

The Reserve Bank of India has introduced a revised Expected Credit Loss (ECL) framework effective 2026, aimed at strengthening early recognition of asset deterioration in banks. The framework mandates forward-looking provisioning, dynamic risk segmentation, and granular disclosures to improve transparency.

Complementing this, the RBI has rationalised norms for the sale of stressed assets to Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs), including streamlined valuation, reporting, and assignment procedures. The Special Non-Performing Asset (SNFA) framework further enables targeted resolution of large exposures, reducing reliance on government bailouts.

Banking institutions must integrate the ECL model into internal risk systems and ensure合规 (compliance) with ARC transaction reporting under the SARFAESI framework. This proactive approach signals a shift from reactive to preventive resolution mechanisms in India’s financial system.
