NBFC Credit Growth Accelerates to 15.8% YoY in August 2026

Data released by the Reserve Bank of India show that NBFCs recorded a credit growth of 15.8% year-on-year in August 2026, a significant increase from the 10.0% growth observed during the same period last year. The expansion underscores strong credit demand across key sectors and improved risk appetite among non-banking lenders.

Notable growth was observed in housing finance, consumer credit, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The data, collected from major NBFCs and Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), suggest a continued shift in market share towards non-bank intermediaries, especially in retail lending. This trend may reflect improved regulatory clarity, capital availability, and digitization of lending processes.

Legal practitioners advising NBFCs must factor in heightened compliance obligations under the Reserve Bank’s prudential norms, including asset classification, exposure limits, and fair practices in debt collection. Rapid growth also increases scrutiny under anti-money laundering frameworks and consumer protection statutes.
