ICAI Suspends CA Over Audit Lapses in ₹1,150 Crore Siphoning Case

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has removed a chartered accountant’s name from its register for one year for failure to report material financial irregularities and going concern uncertainties during an audit, which allowed the siphoning of ₹1,150 crore.

The Disciplinary Directorate found that the auditor disregarded red flags, including unexplained transactions, related-party dealings, and inadequate working capital, without raising appropriate qualifications or disclosures. The ICAI observed that the audit report did not reflect the true and fair view of the company’s financial position as required under SA 700 and Section 143 of the Companies Act, 2013.

"An auditor cannot turn a blind eye to material misstatements, especially where fraud indicators are evident,"
the ICAI order stated. The penalty highlights the professional responsibility of auditors to exercise professional skepticism and adhere to auditing standards.

The ruling serves as a warning to audit professionals facing increasing scrutiny in financial fraud cases. It reinforces ICAI’s stance on accountability under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, particularly where public funds or investor interests are at stake.
