June 2, 2026

The Supreme Court of India has welcomed five new judges, increasing its strength to 37. The appointments come as part of ongoing efforts to address the backlog of cases in the judiciary.

Supreme Court Welcomes Five New Judges

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India increased its working strength from 32 to 37 with the oath-taking of five new judges. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered the oath to Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and V Mohana.

The first four judges were previously serving as Chief Justices in various High Courts, while Justice Mohana made the transition directly from the bar to the bench. This increase in judicial strength comes at a significant time as the Supreme Court continues to handle a high volume of pending cases.

Justices Sanjeev Sachdeva and V Mohana are particularly noted for their previous contributions in various High Courts which may benefit the Supreme Court.

Practitioners should view this development as a positive step towards alleviating the substantial backlog in the judiciary, potentially leading to more efficient case processing and resolution.
