SEBI introduces a manager-led investor accreditation model with ₹5 crore exposure threshold and deemed recognition for overseas investors.
New Accreditation Criteria for Qualified Investors
SEBI has proposed amendments to investor accreditation norms, introducing a manager-led model where regulated entities can accredit investors based on a securities exposure threshold of ₹5 crore. The proposal includes three-year validity and automatic (deemed) accreditation for eligible overseas investors.
The framework aims to streamline onboarding while maintaining due diligence standards. It reduces reliance on independent income/net worth certification by permitting recognition based on verified transactional exposure. This may particularly benefit institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals with substantial market activity.
Legal advisors must assess the impact on KYC and client classification systems. The proposed model, if finalised, could simplify compliance for investment managers while requiring robust internal validation processes.
