Punjab & Haryana HC to hear PIL for CBI probe in LPU violence

September 29, 2026

The Punjab and Haryana High Court agreed to hear a PIL seeking a CBI investigation into recent violence at Lovely Professional University. The petition raises concerns over impartiality and efficacy of the current inquiry.

PIL Seeks CBI Probe Into LPU Violence

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has agreed to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition seeking a CBI investigation into recent incidents of violence at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab. The matter was mentioned on Tuesday before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor, who directed that the case be heard on Wednesday.

Senior Advocate Gaurav Chopra, appearing in the matter, argued that the gravity and nature of the violence necessitate an independent and impartial investigation. The petition alleges that local law enforcement may be influenced due to the university’s institutional prominence, thereby undermining a fair probe. It also highlights potential procedural lapses in the initial response by state authorities.

The PIL seeks directions for the transfer of investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation under the BNSS, citing the need for transparency. While the court has not yet issued formal directions, the urgent listing underscores growing judicial scrutiny over campus safety and institutional accountability. Practitioners should note that such PILs may set precedent for invoking central agencies in cases involving public institutions.
