ICAI Removes CA’s Name for Audit Lapses in ₹1,150cr Fraud Case

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) ordered the removal of a chartered accountant’s name from the register for one year for professional misconduct arising from serious audit lapses in a case involving siphoning of ₹1,150 crore. The Audit Committee of ICAI found that the CA failed to evaluate going concern risks and did not report material irregularities despite red flags.

The case involved a special audit conducted under Section 14AA of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. The Committee observed that the auditor ignored repeated large one-way transactions, did not verify third-party confirmations, and issued an unqualified opinion without assessing the company’s sustainability. Such omissions violated Standards on Auditing (SA) 570 (Going Concern) and SA 250 (Consideration of Laws and Regulations).

This decision reinforces ICAI’s stance on audit accountability, especially in fraud-adjacent scenarios. Practitioners must ensure rigorous documentation and risk assessment, particularly in cases showing financial stress or unusual transactions. The penalty serves as a cautionary precedent for auditors to uphold due diligence and reporting obligations under the Act and applicable SAs.
