ICAI Removes CA's Name for Audit Failures
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) ordered the removal of a chartered accountant’s name from its register for one year for failing to report ₹1,150 crore in fund siphoning and neglecting audit obligations related to going concern uncertainties.
The disciplinary tribunal found that the CA, auditing a company undergoing financial stress, did not exercise due diligence under SA 570 (Going Concern) and failed to disclose material financial irregularities despite red flags. The audit report was found to be misleading, violating Clause 3 and 5 of the Code of Ethics and relevant auditing standards.
The ruling underscores ICAI’s increasing scrutiny of audit quality, particularly in stressed and fraud-affected companies. Practising CAs must now document risk assessments rigorously and escalate concerns to management and regulators where warranted. This order may set a precedent for accountability in forensic audit failures.
