Ex-Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah sues 42 media outlets over honey-trap videos

October 13, 2026

Former CM Siddaramaiah files defamation suit in Bengaluru seeking takedown of videos linking him to a honey-trap. Court reserves order on interim injunction to restrain publication.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has filed a defamation suit before the Bengaluru City Civil and Sessions Court against 42 media houses and digital platforms for circulating videos allegedly implicating him in a honey-trap scandal. The suit seeks permanent injunctions and damages for publication of allegedly defamatory content.

Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge B Pushpanjali has reserved orders on an urgent application seeking interim directions for takedown of the videos and a stay on further dissemination. The defendants include television channels, YouTube channels, and news websites accused of amplifying unverified allegations.

The case highlights challenges in balancing freedom of expression under Article 19(1)(a) and the right to reputation under Article 21. With deepfake and synthetic media concerns rising, courts may be called upon to evolve norms for interim remedies in digital defamation cases involving political figures.
