Delhi HC Bar Association Challenges Judges' Committee Formation

May 26, 2026

The Delhi High Court Bar Association has filed a challenge against the formation of a committee to examine an increase in pecuniary jurisdiction for district courts. The matter is set to be heard by the court.

DHCBA Challenges Committee Formation

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has approached the Delhi High Court to contest the full court's decision to create a committee of judges. This committee is tasked with evaluating a proposal to raise the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts in Delhi from ₹2 crores to ₹20 crores.

During a hearing, DHCBA President N Hariharan presented their plea to a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia. The Bench agreed to list the matter for further proceedings, indicating the importance of the issue at hand.

This challenge highlights potential concerns about access to justice and the efficiency of the judicial system, particularly for lower courts that handle numerous cases. Legal practitioners must remain informed about the outcome of this litigation as it could have significant implications for litigation practices and the structure of court operations.
