CBDT Amends Form 161 via 6th Income Tax Amendment Rules
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified the 6th Income Tax (Amendment) Rules, 2026, introducing revisions to Rule 231 and Form 161 under the Income Tax Act, 1961. The amendment inserts new language to enhance disclosure requirements, particularly concerning financial transactions and reporting obligations for specified entities.
The changes aim to streamline taxpayer compliance and improve data accuracy in income reporting. Form 161, used for furnishing particulars of specified financial transactions, now includes additional fields to capture emerging categories of reportable activities, including cross-border payments and digital asset transfers.
Practitioners must update internal compliance systems to reflect the revised format. The amendment reinforces the CBDT’s ongoing efforts to modernize tax administration and align with evolving economic practices, especially in the digital and globalized transaction space.
